3 DAY SOSSUSVLEI SAFARI - ITINERARY - N$4400 - Leaves every Tuesday

Day 1 - Windhoek to Sesriem, Namib Desert
(lunch & dinner included)

Please meet by 08h30 at The Travel Bug Safaris head office located within the Cardboard Box Backpackers at 15 Johann Albrecht Street, Windhoek West. Here you will be met by your safari guide who will discuss your upcoming safari with you in brief and answer any queries you may have before departure.

Once you are all aboard you will depart at 09h00 and set off on your safari adventure to the famous Namib Desert. The route today takes you south through the town of Rehoboth, established in the early 1870’s by Bastar settlers who moved up from the Cape, and then south-west through the scenic Khomas Hochland highlands to the edge of the Great Escarpment. Here you will stop to stretch your legs and soak up the dramatic view (one of Namibia’s best) from the top of the Spreetshoogte Pass.

Descending the Pass, you can truly appreciate the origins of the name Namib and Namibia, meaning great plain, as you drop down to the expansive Namib Desert plains below you. In this sparsely populated and vast region it is a surprise when you drive into the tiny oasis town aptly called Solitaire – well known for its homemade apple pie (highly recommended!).

The last leg of your journey from Solitaire to Sesriem is through stunning landscapes with your first glimpses of the apricot coloured dunes in the distance. The Camp is situated at the gate to the Namib Naukluft national park.

Upon arrival into camp you can make yourself at home in your comfortable dome tent and spend the rest of the afternoon at leisure around the Camp pool or explore the surrounding area on foot as appeals. This is a good chance to get to know your fellow travelers before heading off to enjoy sunset over the dunes, followed by a tasty dinner and first night camping at Sesriem.

Day 2 - Sesriem to Sossusvlei & Sesriem Canyon to Sesriem

(breakfast pack, picnic lunch & dinner included)

Early rise before the sun this morning to wake up with a quick cup of tea or coffee and light snack. Then set off for a magical excursion with your guide into the Namib Naukluft National Park, home to Sossusvlei, Deadvlei, Dune 45 and the towering apricot coloured sand dunes. First declared as a game reserve in 1907, the Park know conserves 50,000 sq km of pristine desert, one of the oldest on earth, and is one of the largest national parks in Africa.

Before sunrise drive along the ephemeral Tsauchab River valley which, when in flow, still weaves its way along the floodplains to gather 60 km to the west at Sossusvlei – ‘place of gathering water’.

Our first stop is at Dune 45, a picturesque dune which stands 120 m above the grassy plain. Here the energetic can climb to the top for a birds eye view of the valley and surrounding dunes and then descend for a well deserved hot drink and breakfast pack. We then carry on by 4x4 to Sossusvlei. You spend the cooler hours of the morning exploring around Deadvlei and Sossusvlei and getting to know the surprising variety of flora and fauna that has adapted to live in this harsh desert environ.

Once you have explored to your hearts content, you can seek shade under a camel thorn tree amongst the dunes and replenish with picnic lunch. Return to the vehicle and your guide will drive you back along river valley to Sesriem where you will stop off to view Sesriem Canyon, also carved by the Tsauchab River. This small canyon is 1.5 km long and 30 m at its deepest and is best appreciated by walking down into its cool depths – a welcome relief to the heat of the desert. Water can be found at the bottom of the canyon most of the year round and was once a vital water source to early settlers and their livestock.

You then return to Sesriem camp in the afternoon where you can empty the sand from your shoes and relax for the remainder of the day. Sundowners and dinner at the Camp and a second night camping at Sesriem.

Day 3 - Sesriem to Windhoek
(breakfast included)

Revel in the chance for a lie in this morning before a substantial breakfast is served at 08h00. You will then depart at 08h30 for the return drive to Windhoek, arriving back to The Travel Bug Safari base in the early afternoon at around 14h00.
